Spring Super Saturday – Literacy and Family Engagement

April 18, 2020 @ 9:00 am - 3:30 pm EDT

$50.00

This theme of the Super Saturday will be Literacy and Family Engagement. A sample of classes is listed below.

1. Effectively Engaging Families in the Classroom:
Research tells us that parental involvement in a child’s education is critical, but engaging parents in their child’s education can be a challenge. This course will explore ways to engage families initially and keep them involved in the classroom.

2. Integrating the Environment into Early Literacy
How can you integrate nature and literacy experiences? Dive into children’s literature that encourages nature-based learning and experiences. Discover ways to support language and literacy development outdoors, using a variety of accessible materials!

3. Molly of Denali – Exploring Informational Text and Family & Community Learning
Molly of Denali is an animated PBS KIDS series that follows the adventures of feisty and resourceful Molly Mabray, a 10-year-old Alaska Native girl. Molly of Denali is designed to help kids ages 4-8 develop informational text knowledge and skills, while also highlighting traditional Alaska Native values. In this session we will discuss what informational text is and develop an understanding that how to find, use, and create informational text is essential to STEM and social studies learning, success in the workplace and citizenship. Participants will also be introduced to the PBS KIDS Family & Community Learning model to engage families in active, hands-on learning experiences.

4. We’re All In This Together! Curriculum Encouraging Family Involvement
This training will introduce cognitive, social, and creative activities to build a curriculum around All Stars recommendations. Children feel more secure and driven when they feel that their family is engaged and interested in what they learn. That engagement can be as easy as an interactive discussion on the car ride home. The activities will also be geared toward teaching methods for families to work on at home to reinforce class time learning. Get ready to create, explore and enjoy!

5. Making Stories Come Alive
This workshop would include games and activities that help to make familiar books and stories an interactive and hands-on experience. The session would include “at home” activities that can help with engaging the family in the fun.

6. A Taste of Literacy
In this workshop, participants will get hands-on and make a 30 day menu of Literacy and Family Engagement Ideas!

7. 30 Million Word Gap
Children’s vocabulary skills are linked to their economic backgrounds. By 3 years of age, there is a 30 million word gap between children from the wealthiest and poorest families. We will discuss ways that we can help lessen the gap and strategies to use in the classroom to improve vocabulary in young children.

8. Setting the Stage for Preschool Play and Learning

In this FUN and interactive workshop we’ll talk about how the activities & play experiences, the physical environment we provide and all the things we do to support and extend their learning enhances preschooler’s healthy growth and development.
